Advertising is the new music video

Shane Meadows is a remarkably pragmatic director. This afternoon -- probably already past, for any UK readers -- Meadows will appear at London's Nokia store to hype up a promotional stunt tied in to the London Film Festival. Aspiring filmmakers are invited to submit a 90-minute short on Nokia's behalf showing "what being connect in 2009 means to you." First prize gets you the (ambiguously worded) "chance" to work on Nokia's next ad campaign and airfare/tickets for two to the London Film Festival; showing up at the store gets you the chance to talk with Meadows and have him view your work. Even if you're not crazy about Meadows, it's still kind of amazing that a globally known filmmaker (at least on the festival circuit) is doing this. Then again, if anyone knows how to pragmatically negotiate the line between paid whoring and art, it's Meadows. His last film released...
